From January 7 to 9, 2026, we held a self-invited international workshop entitled “International Joint Workshop on Slow-to-Fast Earthquakes 2026 in Italy” at the University of Florence, Italy. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) was led by Professor Paola Vannucchi of the University of Florence and Dr. Samuele Papeschi of CNR-IGG. A total of 54 participants attended the workshop, including 17 from Japan, as well as attendees from the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, Turkey, Taiwan, and other countries.
The workshop featured 22 oral presentations and 22 poster presentations. The oral sessions were organized thematically, with Geology on Day 1, Experiments and Models on Day 2, and Observations on Day 3. Ample time was allocated for the poster sessions, allowing participants to view and discuss the posters in a relaxed atmosphere.
Following the workshop, a geological field trip to Elba Island was conducted on January 10 and 11. Participants enjoyed excellent outcrops of ophiolite and subduction complexes, including serpentinite, blueschist, and serpentinite shear zones.
Overall, the workshop was highly productive, fostering extensive discussions that are expected to lead to future collaborative research.
